Strangers on a Train
30" x 40"
1986 Artist's Collection
Daumier painted all three classes of train passengers, but it was The Third-Class Carriage that brought out his greatest qualities, matching a Michelangelesque power of drawing to his deep fund of human empathy. The serenity, however, may be temporary, as passengers in the rear have been replaced by two figures from another Daumier painting, Scapin and Silvester, characters from Molière who are clearly up to no good.
