To make an impact at the opening of the Royal Academy in 1770, Thomas Gainsborough dressed the son of a friend in a Cavalier costume from the previous century. He "appropriated" the pose from a portrait by his idol, Antony Van Dyck. When I was young, "Blue Boy" seemed to be on every calendar. Eager to try a series of variations on one masterpiece, I decided it was time for a young man who has been going around in satin and lace for more than 200 years to lighten up about color.
