1989 Collection of Dr. Jonathan Levine
With a little juggling of history and geography, one could imagine the Civil War encounter off Cherbourg between the Confederate raider Alabama and the frigate Kearsarge, painted by Manet, taking place off Saint-Adresse, where his friend Monet painted his father on a terrace. Civilization had not yet advanced to the point where M.Monet could watch a war on TV while enjoying the sea breeze, so I decided to provide him with one.
