For all of Degas's well-known flaws as a human being, he was often capable of works that move us with their unsentimental but sharp human empathy as well as their masterful observation. The laundress almost seems to sing out her weariness and her boredom, and here, another Degas working girl, from the popular cafe-concerts, picks up the tune.
